Three Soulful Ways to Make It Fall Cozy
Fall is undeniably my favorite time of the year. It’s layered affects of cool winds blowing, leaves falling, and colors abounding just adds something special to the season. It marks the passage of summer and the entry of sweater weather and pumpkin spices. More than that, it brings people together in belonging over campfires and warm suppers.
Over the seasons, fall has changed in my home. When my daughter was a child, fall was about costume parties, candy, pumpkin patches, and hay rides. Now, it signifies more of a feeling than an event and the way I have decorated my home for fall reflects a more grounded and earthy approach.
When I thought about how I could inspire fall decorating in three ways, it was very easy for me to create my list. It’s just what I do! So, here is an expanded version of those three ways.
LAYER IN LOCAL
Living in a rural area I have been blessed to visit and source from local farmers and florists for seasonal cooking and decorating. This has been quite a new surprise. Instead of thinking fall decorations, I now bring the taste and smell of fall into my home. This year I have also started a fall garden with vegetables, lettuces, kale, and cucumbers that can harvest in fall. I’m not an expert and only a beginner but it’s been fun to make this part of my fall ritual. I’ve also created a Finally Home Fall Signature Mocktail and Apple cake sourcing apples from my local farm stand.
HOSTING A SMALL BATCH MEAL
The highlight of fall for me is always to invite a few friends and neighbors in for a simple lunch or supper using local ingredients and a fall time menu. This year we hosted two at our home; one being a chili night, offering two types of hearty chili, seasonal fall apple ciders, harvest slaw, and sides our friends and family brought to the table. The other was a fall lunch for the ladies where I debuted my signature mocktail and homemade apple cake. We took a drive onto the mountain and witnessed God’s bounty of color and talked for hours. It would be an understatement to say I love my new fall celebration.
BRING OUT THE FALLWARE
I love to use the simple china and what I call “fallware” to decorate the tables in my home. It really adds that fall look to everything! The colors are warm and inviting, and the centerpieces are seasonal from the yard or local garden centers. When spring/summer approach I put away fall dishes, cups, and glasses and bring out the lighter summertime china. It’s just another way for me to celebrate each season to the fullest.
BONUS
I make space in my small flower box on the porch for seasonal plants. I dig a hole large enough for a pot to fit in and just switch the plants out very easily for seasons; especially if they are not long lasting, like Mums. It creates a great burst of color at the front door.
Happy Fall and I’m leaving the light on for you!
