Why Did I Simplify My Life?
Why did I make a choice to simply life? There comes a moment when we must confront the time for letting go. Often, life gets so crowded with things we've outgrown, yet continue to hold onto for too long. Habits we've maintained, methods that have previously worked, and the mix of successes and failures that have tethered us in place—all these elements persist because, somehow, we've managed to keep them afloat. Initially, the yearning for change is faint, a quiet thought of "what if?" But eventually, the day arrives. That day arrived for me after I hit a wall when I found myself burned out, overextended, spread thin, and the smile fading from my face… truth was, I was exhausted and needed a change. I came to understand that perhaps I wasn’t built for the pressure anymore. It was time, and I made a brave choice to go in search of all the joyful and simple things again. The thought of release seemed like a dream, but can I really do this? Can I live with the uncertainty of not knowing where this will lead?
In February 2025, we transitioned from living in a bustling city to settling into a peaceful rural community. Home life without a strict schedule, leisurely walks through the pasture, slow mornings, and complete rest for my nervous system. It took courage to release the dreams I chased in order to embrace God’s purpose for me and my family. The simple, special joys of home life touched my heart and soul. I was home. I think I wanted this more than anything—a place to be myself again. Pay attention to the God nudges, they mean something as He knows our hearts deepest desires.
As we embraced this new way of living — caring for our animals, tending the soil, cooking together, nurturing loved ones, creating space for meaningful conversations, and engaging in activities that bring genuine joy — we sensed ourselves becoming deeply rooted in a restful rhythm. When we allow quiet stillness to heal our souls, it feels like returning to the very beginning. Only then can we fully show up for others and ourselves serving with joy that flows from a rested and peaceful heart.
A new chapter of simplified living is unfolding. Children grow up, our bodies and energy levels change, and we ourselves mature. Time to move on. It’s alright; there will be new people to cherish and new experiences to embrace. A simple place of wonderful new beginnings.
What is God asking you to release in order to embrace a more focused and simplified journey?
Three Ways to Embrace a Simplified Life
ROOTED IN GOD’S PROVISION
Trusting that God will provide what we truly need allows us to release the clutter both in our home and heart that distracts us from his peace. Keep only what serves a purpose or sparks gratitude. When our cupboards and calendars breathe, our hearts do too.
REST
Simplifying our routines allows for slow living, delighting in God’s presence instead of our to do lists. By protecting our quiet days and time we live from rest and renewal. Our homes just feel fuller and we are able to serve others from a place of rest.
SLOWER PACE
Model simple heart felt connection over perfection and performance. A humble table and a warm heart are more than enough. Spend more time being present with people and enjoy the simplicity of conversation and lingering moments rather than overextending our calendars.
